| Safely Home™ - Alzheimer Wandering Registry |
| |
| WHAT is the Safely Home™ Registry? |
- Safely Home™ is a nationwide program designed by the Alzheimer Society of Canada in partnership with the RCMP.
- It speeds up the search process to find those who become lost and return them home safely.
- Information to help identify the missing person is stored in a confidential database that police officers anywhere in Canada can access.
- An ID bracelet with an identification number allows quick access to this database.
|
| WHO should enroll in the Registry? |
- Safely Home™ is for anyone who has the potential to go missing due to memory loss, difficulty communicating, or who is unable to problem solve well under pressure.
- Up to 60% of people diagnosed with Alzheimer Disease or a related disorder eventually become lost.
- Those who have not yet exhibited wandering behaviour or getting lost in familiar places have a potential risk of doing so.
- A person benefits from being registered regardless of where he or she lives. Even those living in a secure unit can become separated from family on outings or appointments.
- All persons with the potential to get lost, become confused and unknowingly put themselves in danger should be registered.
|
| WHERE do I Register? |
| |
| WHEN should I register? |
- When you or a family member are experiencing memory loss or dementia
- When you or a family member have been diagnosed with memory loss or dementia
- When you or a family member are concerned about the risk of becoming lost in the future
- When you or a family member would not be able to communicate who you are or where you live
|
| WHY should I register? |
- Because individuals with dementia are at serious risk of injury or death when they go missing
- Because the best chance for a missing person being found safe is within the first 12 hours
- Because Safely Home™ speeds up the search process
- Because you want to protect those with dementia from harm
- Because individuals with dementia get lost even in familiar places
- Because individuals with dementia may be unable to tell their name or address
- Because individuals with dementia may believe they must be somewhere and start to go there
- Because you need to have peace of mind that this added protection is in place when needed
|
| HOW do I register? |
- Mail your completed application along with a one-time registration fee of $35.00 to the Alzheimer Society of Canada. (The registration fee is waived for some Veterans.)
